Kiambu district food security profile
Physical and Agro-climatic Conditions:
Kiambu, a Central Province district, has seven divisions: Lari, Kikuyu, Limuru, Kiambaa, Githunguri, Ndieya and Karai. The district covers an area of 1,324 km2 with 90% being high agricultural potential land. Rainfall is reliable and ranges from 1,500mm in the highlands to 500mm in the semi-arid areas of Ndeiya and Karai. These two divisions are vulnerable to drought.
Kiambu has three broad categories of soils namely high level uplands soils, soils on the volcanic foot ridges and plutonic soils. These Nitisols and Andosols are generally well-developed, well-drained, deep, high in fertility and are suitable for cultivation of various crops. However, repeated and high intensive use has led to depletion of soil nutrients. The plutonic soils found in the semi-arid areas of the district are either sandy or clay soils that are poorly drained but have potential for ranching and cultivation of drought resistant varieties.
