Isiolo district food security profile

Physical and Agro-climatic Condition
Isiolo district, Eastern province, has geographical coverage of 25,605 km2. It comprises six administrative divisions namely Central, Garbatullah, Sericho, Merti, Oldonyiro and Kinna. The district is largely flat with a low lying plain that rises from 200m above sea level at the Lorian Swamp to 300 m in the Merti Plateau1. Isiolo is dry almost through out the year and rainfall is generally scarce and unreliable. It is distributed within two seasons in a year with an average of 580.2 mm. Full report

Kitui district food security profile

Physical and Agro-Climatic Conditions:
Kitui District, Eastern Province, covers an area of 20,402 km2, 34% of which falls under the Tsavo National Park. Administratively, it is divided into ten divisions: Central, Chuluni, Matinyani, Mwitika, Mutitu, Ikutha, Yatta, Mutongoni, Mutomo and Mutha. Full report

Physical and Agro-Climatic Conditions:
Makueni District, curved from Machakos district in 1992, is one of the 13 districts that make up the Eastern province. It occupies an area of 7,965.8 km2 and has sixteen administrative divisions with Kibwezi, Kathonzweni and Makindu being the largest. Altitude ranges from 600m in Tsavo at the southern end of the district to 1900m in Mbooni and Kilungu Hills. The district is mainly arid and semi-arid and is characterised by hot and dry climate for most of the year.Full report

Physical and Agro-Climatic Conditions: 
Marsabit District is located in the Eastern Province of Kenya. It has a geographical coverage of 66,000 km2 with Lake Turkana occupying about 7.5% of the land area. Marsabit is the second largest district in Kenya, accounting for nearly 11% of the country’s surface. It is sub-divided into 6 administrative divisions: Central, Gadamoji, Laisamis, Maikona, Loiyangalani and North Horr. Moyale district food security profile


Physical and Agro-climatic Condition:
Moyale is one of thirteen districts in Eastern Province, Kenya. It occupies about 9,390.3 km2 and comprises four administrative divisions: Central, Golbo, Uran and Obbu. Moyale district has diverse physiographic conditions ranging from plateau hills rising from 800-1,200 m along the border with Ethiopia to flat low-lying plains (500-800m) on its borders with Isiolo and Wajir districts. Full report
 

Tharaka district food security profile

Physical and Agro-climatic Conditions: 
Tharaka District, Eastern Province, covers an area of 1,569.5 km2. It is sub-divided into three administrative divisions: Tharaka Central, Tharaka South and Tharaka North. The district comprises of the low, hilly and sandy marginal areas of the former expansive Meru district. Rainfall is bimodal and fluctuates between 500 to 800mm annually, but the rains are often erratic. Long rains are received in October - December while short rains are in March - May. Full report
