Physical and Agro-climatic Condition:
Garissa district, North-Eastern Province, covers an area of 33,620 km2 with only about 1% being arable1. Garissa is low lying with altitude varying between 70m to 400m above sea level.
The climate is arid and rainfall is bimodal with mean annual rainfall of 434.8 mm but the rains are very unreliable. The soils range from sandstones (Balambala Division), dark clays in some patches (southern divisions) to fertile alluvial soils along the River Tana Basin2. Except for the sandstones and the clays, the rest are fertile soils suitable for crop production in regions with adequate rainfall. Nomadism is the most common land use activity in the region. Wajir district food security profile
Physical and Agro-climatic Conditions:
Wajir district, lying on about 56,501 km2 of surface area, is the largest district in North-Eastern Province of Kenya. It is sub-divided into thirteen divisions with Buna, Sabule and Diff being the largest ones. The district is generally plain with scattered hills on the north, along the border with Ethiopia.
It lies in the sahelian climatic region, characterized by long dry spells and short rainy seasons, and is mainly classified as zone VII (entirely arid)2, except for Bute and Gurar divisions which are categorized as zone IV. Full report
Mandera district food security profile
Physical and Agro-climatic Conditions:
Mandera District, North-Eastern Province, has an expanse of about 26,474 km2. It is characterized by low-lying rocky hills, with the plains rising gradually from 400m from the south at Elwak to around 900m in Malkamari area in the North1. It is divided into 18 administrative divisions with the largest being Ashabito, Takaba and Kotulo, in that order. Full report
