  NORTHERN PASTORAL AGRICULTURAL CLUSTER









 


The pastoral north cluster covers the districts shown in figure 1.1. The region has an estimated population of 1,205,427 with Turkana being the largest in size and population.


The main source of livelihood is pastoralism as indicated in the map and communities keep mixed herds (goat, sheep, cattle, poultry, camels and donkeys). Pockets of agro pastoral zone are also found in the districts and subsistence farming is mainly practiced around the high potential areas of the cluster.

The main crops grown in the agro-pastoral zone are food crops i.e. maize, beans, sorghum, wheat, cowpeas, teff and green grams and fruits like pawpaws, oranges and mangoes. Emerging crops like Aloe Vera and jatropha are slowly coming as cash crops.

Formal employment/business/petty trade is also found in major town centers within the districts. Fishing is a major source of income for people living along the shores of Lake Turkana.Full report
